The muscles in my mouth are shifting, because they’re restless.
A tongue, without consciousness,
is always seeking to find where it sit best
Part dissertation, part social choir, part autobiography, Sound As Ritual Matter is a lecture performance originally written to be conducted with an intimate group, in an intimate room, one where we could still hear the A.C. hum. The presentation is broken up into two categories: slides instructing what our internal monologue hears and slides that break up that monologue with oration. While borrowing from Judith Butler’s gender performance to connect the naturalization of structure through repetition, this lecture performance focuses on how the migratory nature of sound and frequencies can be key tools to dissecting systems of power.
