Their shedding, which took place in Buffalo, New York, slick against the lining of their gums, managed to slip beneath the ice in the gaps of a gasp. When she was sufficient with her time, and the Buffalo was in no rush, the woman was able to write the letter to her first born.
 
       
            these sheets of ice, its memory for water, of a cycle, will eventually melt. It is in its nature to melt. And only the print, a portrait of a mother with her daughter, taken nearly a decade prior, traversed the Atlantic, and becoming color damaged from copious X-ray scans, will remain. Drenched, saturated, perhaps slightly dissolved, but intact.
